Draw the symbols onto graph paper.Cut out each symbol and glue onto a notecard.
Architectural drawings • Drawings that contain information about the size, shape, and location of all parts of a house • These drawings use lines, symbols, views and notes to convey specific ideas.
Scale (1/4” = 1’) • When a house is drawn to scale it is drawn proportional to the actual house • Drawings are usually drawn at a scale of ¼” = 1’.
Show the type of window or door and the direction each opens. Door and window symbols
Indicate the switches, receptacles, light fixtures, and appliances. Electrical symbols:
Dishwasher DW
Electrical Outlet 220 volt outlet 120 volt outlet GFCI outlet GFCI
Indicate plumbing, heating, and air-conditioning fixtures. Mechanical symbols
Cabinets Upper cabinets Lower Cabinets
Alphabet of Lines • In order to understand what the drafter is trying to get across, you must be able to understand the symbols and lines he uses • Each line has a definite form and line weight. • 5 Main Line Types: Visible, Hidden, Center, Dimension, Extension.
Visible Lines • Dark, heavy lines • Show the outline and shape of an object (SHOWS SHAPE) • Defines features you can see in a particular view.
Hidden Lines • Light, narrow, short, dashed lines • Shows the outline of a feature that can not be seen in a particular view • Used to help clarify a feature, but can be omitted if they clutter a drawing.
Center Lines • Thin line consisting of long and short dashes • Shows the center of holes, slots, paths of rotation, and symmetrical objects.
Dimension Lines • Dark, heavy lines • Show the length, width, and height of the features of an object (SHOWS SIZE) • Terminated with arrowheads at the end.
Extension Line Dimension Line Extension Lines • Used to show the starting and stopping points of a dimension (SHOWS LOCATION) • Must have at least a 1/16th space between the object and the extension line.
Alphabet of lines: 7 different lines used on drawings to communicate meanings. • Visible Line ___________________ • Phantom Line _______ __ __ _______ • Hidden Line __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ • Center Line ______ _ ______ _ ______ • Dimension Lines 4 ½ “ • Break Line • Section Line / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / /
Are there more symbols? • YES, but these are some of the basic symbols you will need to use • Are symbols always drawn EXACTLY like these? • NO, different architects will have some variations, but they will be very similar.
Architect’s Scale • A specialized ruler for measuring architectural drawings
CADD (CAD) – Computer Aided Design and Drafting • Advantages • Changes are easy to make • Scaled • Saves time • Disadvantages • Some programs are complicated.
