About Migrant Workers • No real accurate number of overseas workers • Some NGO said more than 6 to 7 Millions • Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, Hongkong , Taiwan, Singapore are most optional destinations • Malaysia employed more than 2 million. • Majority working in domestic workers and mostly are women.

  6. Low education is reflected on migrant working women . • Estimated 700.000/ year left their home land for new countries • Number of remittances is Rp 100 Billion ( 100 million $ US )

  7. Condition • Most of them working in informal sectors • Domestic Workers • Building & Constructions • Plantations • Low educational background • Limited skill belongs to them • Illiteracy on worker rights and protections • Vulnerable to harassment, exploitation, trafficking, blackmail etc

Problems • Problems facing by Overseas workers are very definitely complicated. • Act and regulation have low protection • Government’s less concern in handling issues on migrant • Institutions addressing migrants are not well cooperated so that problems frequently are misunderstood . • Problems are mostly internal dominated ( pre departure handling is poorly managed ) • Migrant are not well recognized as real workers • Low inspection are mostly derived from recruitment . • Low enforcement doest not implement toughly

  9. What Union Can do • Support and promote migrant workers’ rights. • Bilateral agreement should linked between National Center ( sending and receiving countries ) • Criticize the week point of Migrant Act and regulations and making drafts. • Set up networking to Global union and affiliate.

  10. Cooperation Inserting human/workers rights based on ILO conventions or relating clauses. Trade Union, Voluntary social organizations, and other parties should be united Stake holders ( parliaments members, government and employers association) should continoustly meet and discuss on migrants issues Govt takes action to whom are violated the rules

  11. Decent Work • Ratification of ILO convention on Grant should be done both sending and receiving countries. (beside ILO core conventions ) • ILO should be pro active to decide countries are safe or vulnerable to migrants • Receiving countries should recognize migrant’s rights. • Discriminations should be totally eliminated ( citizens and migrants) • Trade Unions at all level should promote humanitarianism, civilization values for peaceful work and world .
