Community radio • Community radio stations are a new type of not-for-profit radio service, designed to operate on a small-scale and to deliver social gain to one or more communities • Community radio was introduced in 2004. - 360 applications - 201 groups awarded licences - 135 stations on air • Range of communities - general audience - urban (18%) or town / rural (41%). -- - minority ethnic groups (14%) - young people (9%) - religious groups (7%) • Funding - Community radio fund, £483,859 (7%) - Non-public sources, £3,180,869 (47%) - Local authorities, £1,054,047 (16%) - Other public funds, £2,050,619 (30%)

Promoting social cohesion: the role of community media (Lewis) Need to • Create legislative infrastructure • preserve analogue frequencies, ensure community radio is not disadvantaged in the digital environment • recognise social value of community media and its role as a form of local public service • commission studies of best practice, surveys of emerging needs • Encourage effective sector bodies
The BBC, partnerships and community radio • CR sector representation on the Radio Council • offer studio space • publicise CR websites • offer placements and training • offer content • multi-chip receivers after digital switch
