The First Salmon Ceremonial • Spring • Celebration of first catch-Spring (King) Salmon • Piece of ceremonial salmon • Bones & skin-gathered & returned to water (life source) • Ceremonies-held out of respect to celebrate return of salmon to their traditional spawning grounds.

The Salmon symbolizes instinct, determination and persistence as well as wealth and prosperity. Salmon is also a symbol of abundance because the Salmon is the primary food source for the people of the Northwest Coast. It is also symbolic of dependability and renewal representing the provider of life. Salmon in pairs is good luck.
Importance of Colour in Aboriginal Art • Historically, the ancient art of Aboriginal colours consisted of 4 main colours: -Black -Red -Blue/Green -White In groups of 4, discuss where you think these colours originated from. In your group, can you think of any other colours used?

Storytelling Aboriginal art is directly intertwined with indigenous cultures and symbolizes these cultures in their time and place, as opposed to being considered "crafts."
Writing Prompts • Write out the following to attach to the bottom of salmon: “Salmon is important to Aboriginal culture because it represents…… • “The story on my salmon is about….” “This is important to me because…..” • After children have completed their art and writing pieces, take pictures of their work. Get pieces ready for display.
