  3. Identification • Smallest salmon • Black spots on back • Spots on entire caudal fin • Pinkish green color when spawning

  4. Habits of Pink Salmon • Hatch and then quickly head to salt water • Eat plankton, larvae and insects • Spend 15 months at sea and spawn near coast

  5. Chum Salmon (Dog Salmon or Keta salmon) • Average: 9lbs • Record: 32lbs • Poorest meat quality

  6. Description • Widest distribution of any Pacific Salmon • Used as dried fish for winter use • Ocean Chum: greenish blue on top with speckles on back • In ocean it’s hard to tell them from sockeye (red) and coho (silver) • BUT chum have no spots on caudal fin

  7. Spawning chum: green and purple • Males develop kype

  8. Spawning • Spends 3-4 years at sea and usually spawns within 100 miles of the sea • After eggs hatch, the young travel out to sea
