NWL – Focus for our walks What are we aiming to find out? How do students learn best What are we trying to measure/assess? What works generally for all
Expected Protocol Your visit is organised and agreed You do not disrupt the learning in the lesson Always stand to the side or the edges – don’t distract from the teacher or block someone’s view. If the children are working independently or in groups agree whether you are going to mingle and ask questions or simply be a ‘fly on the wall’ observer. Don’t chat amongst yourselves whilst the teacher or pupils are addressing the class!
How do we gather evidence? Observations – watch / listen Questioning Note taking Photographs
What can you observe? Entry to class Seating arrangements Starter activity Relationship with Teacher/pupils Displays Pace of lesson Help given Peer group activities
What Questions to ask? Ones that will give objective answers Ones that give guidance
How do you assess the evidence? Review your own notes/thoughts and summarise the findings. Discuss with your team the main findings. Identify and report the three main areas of evidence. Following the conclusion of all visits share the patterns you have observed that enable learning to take place.
