Reform Efforts by Republicans in South: Drawbacks (i.e. costs) • 1) Many state gov’t had to borrow money & impose high property taxes to pay for programs • 2) Property owners who couldn’t pay taxes & ultimately lost their land • 3) Political corruption among S. Republicans
Ku Klux Klan • Formed in TN (1866) • Name means “Circle of Brothers” • 1st Grand Wizard: Nathan Forrest (former Conf. Gen. during CW) • Goal:To drive out Union troops and carpetbaggers and regain control of South for Dem. Party
White Southerner’s Disliked Republican Party- Why? • 1) Party included Northerners & Blacks • 2) Southerners believed U.S. Army was an occupying power & had forced new Republican gov’tson them
