Unit 9: Test-Taking Skills • Why talk about testing? According to whatis.techtarget.com, “certification is a formal process of making certain that an individual is qualified in terms of particular knowledge or skills.” • Typically, an agency (such as a software company or a professional organization) sets forth requirements and produces standardized testing in order for individuals to obtain the certification. Fees are assessed, so appropriate preparation the first time is prudent. • Certifications can complement the completion of an earned degree to strengthen a resume or give a boost towards advancement.
Lets go through the test • If you have taken the Unit 9 practice test already just listen • Follow along with the way I read the questions and figure out what the best answer may be
ANXIETY Mnemonics HOMES = Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie and Superior (the Great Lakes) Roy G. Biv = red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet (colors of the rainbow) TRouBLe = top, right, bottom, left (margins and padding for web designers) Every Good Boy Does Fine = EGBDF (lines of the treble clef) My Very Eager Mother Just Served Us Nine Pizzas (Mercury, Venus, Earth … the order of the planets, when Pluto was still considered one) Rhymes and Songs Rhyme: Thirty days hath September … to learn how many days in each month Rhyme: I after e, except before c … to help with spelling Song: Do, a deer, a female deer … to learn solfége syllables for reading music Chunking Social Security numbers Some phone numbers, such as 800-CAT-HELP combine chunking and a form of mnemonics
During the Test During the test • Wear comfortable clothing. • Play soothing music or insist on quiet, depending on what works best for you. • Have adequate lighting. • Sit in a comfortable (but not too comfortable) chair. • Watch the clock and pace yourself. Don’t rush. • Read each question fully and carefully, looking for keywords. • Do easiest questions and/or those which can earn the most points first. • Don’t leave anything blank, unless there are penalties for wrong answers. • If you have time, review your answers. • If you’re not sure of an answer, don’t spend too much time on it. Instead, go back later. • Look for clues to answers you don’t know in other questions. • Don’t compare yourself to others
