  1. Academic Vocabulary Strategies Facilitators: Erica Hilliker, Deb Schuitema, & Libbie Drake

  2. Content Objectives • We will classify content-area vocabulary to distinguish among tier 1, tier 2, and tier 3 words. • We will examine vocabulary strategies for deeper comprehension of content-area vocabulary. • We will create tools for vocabulary instruction in the classroom.

  3. Language Objectives • We will discuss the application of vocabulary strategies in the classroom. • We will write models of vocabulary activities to use in the classroom.

  4. Activator-Tier Vocabulary Sort Directions: • In your content area groups, sort the list of words and record them into their respective tiers.

  5. Tier Vocabulary Debrief • Why is important to know the difference between Tier 1, Tier 2, and Tier 3 vocabulary?

  6. Card Connect Directions: • Get into small groups • Assign a group member to be the dealer • Deal out two vocabulary cards to each group member. • The dealer will begin the game, by flipping over one of the remaining cards in the deck. • Any member of the group can make a connection by choosing one of his or her cards and laying it next to the card the dealer has turned over. Write the connection between the two cards on a post-it note and use the post-it to join the two cards together. • Continue in the same way until all of the group members vocabulary cards have been used up.

  7. Gallery Walk • With your group members, travel to each table to observe how other groups made connections between their vocabulary cards. • What are the similarities? • What are the differences?

  8. Card Connect Debrief • Why would card connect be a good activity for ELLs? • How could you use it in your classroom?

  11. On your Own Using the vocabulary list that you brought today and the supplies set out for you, create your own KIM flip book to use in your classroom.

  12. KIM-Debrief • Why would KIM be a good strategy for ELLs? • How could you use this strategy in your classroom?

  14. On Your Own • Using the blank template provided, make a vocabulary cootie catcher that you could use in the classroom.

  15. Vocabulary Dice Review Make a connection to another word Give your definition of the word Draw the word Act it out Give a synonym or antonym Use the word in a sentence
