  11. QoS – Traffic Classification and Prioritization • Rate Limitation: A means to provide CIR • Per subscriber port • Classification: Distinguish between classes of service • Physical port • P bit • DSCP/ToS • Mapping and Queuing • 4 Queues for 4 Classes of Service (CoS) according to classification • Every queue gets a priority: 1, 2, 3,4 • Strict priority - packets are transmitted according to queue priority • Highest priority recommended for management

  12. PSN PSN Resiliency – Link Protection • Link Aggregation (802.3ad) based • Both uplink redundant ports connected to a single upstream device • Both uplinks are considered as a single logical entity • Dual homing • Uplink redundant ports are connected to two different upstream devices • Network switch over is performed by control protocol such as STP (Ethernet) or RSVP-TE (VPLS/MPLS) Single homing Gigabit Ethernet CPE 1 or 4 Dual homing • Switch criteria: • Loss Of Signal (LOS) indication • Manual Gigabit Ethernet CPE 1 or 4

  13. Operations Administration & Maintenance

  14. Operations and Maintenance (OAM) • Connectivity verificationEthernet is connectionless, where there is not traffic there is no verification of connectivity • Fault DetectionAutomatically detect faults to maintain promised availability SLA • Performance MonitoringPreventive maintenance based on network degradationProvide SLA reports to customers • Alarm PropagationAnnounce alarms to network for self healing functions such as redundancy • Diagnostic LoopbacksIsolate problems without the truck-rolls

  15. Standards:Operations Admin. & Maintenance 802.3ah (Access Link ME) A summary of available Ethernet OAM Mechanisms CPE E-NTU E-NTU CPE Operator B Operator A Customer Premises Customer Premises 802.1ag/ Y.1731 (UNI-N to UNI-N ME) * Pre-standard support does not provide interoperability with other vendors.

  16. Access Link OAM:Standard IEEE 802.3ah in v3.5 802.3ah (Access Link ME) • ETX Support Passive mode designed for network termination • Auto Discovery - Discovers if next hop supports 802.3ah • Loopbapck - Remote layer 1 loopback of all traffic Excludes 802.3ah OAM messages from loopback • MIB retrieval - No IP needed to get MIB parameters • Remote failure indication • Link fault upon discovery of disconnect, log alarm, send trap • Dying Gasp: Upon a power failure 802.3ah dying gasp message. Additionally, SNMP trap is sent. CPE ETX ETX CPE Operator B Operator A Customer Premises Customer Premises

  17. End-to-End OAM: Continuity Check (CC) OAM Customer Premises Customer Premises • Connectivity Check messages are sent every 1 second, CC can be defined per EVC • Loss of Continuity (LOC) • Declare LOC - Upon 3.5 seconds without receiving CC OAM frame • Recovery - 2 CC OAM frames within a window of 3.5 seconds • Upon CC failure • Send trap • Update active alarm log • Update statistics CPE E-NTU E-NTU CPE Operator B Operator A CC Sink CC Source CC OAM Frames

  18. End-to-End OAM: Loopback (LB) OAM • Pre-standard 802.1ag implementation • Non intrusive, defined per EVC and applies to OAM messages only • Required for performance monitoring Customer Premises Customer Premises CPE E-NTU E-NTU CPE Operator B Operator A LB OAM Request LB OAM Reply

  19. End-to-End OAM: Performance Monitoring (PM) OAM • Performance Monitoring Per EVC up to 48* PM instances • Frame Delay, Frame Delay Variation, Frame Loss, Availability • Traps can be defined per EVC per parameter with threshold • OAM PM Statistics are collected in 15 minutes intervalsCyclic 96 intervals kept (24 hours) • Additional PM (not OAM related) • Performance Measurements per port (RMON based RFC 2819) such as dropped frames, oversize frames etc. • Traps with thresholds ‘Rising’ and ‘Falling’ thresholds definition* In VLAN stacking mode (Q-in-Q), 16 PM instances are available

  20. Device Fault Propagation:Net port to subscriber port Network port failure Failure propagated to user port • ‘Link down’ status on the Network port causes ‘link down’ status on the user port. • In case of multiple user ports cause ‘link down’ status on all user ports or part of them according to parameter • ‘Wait to restore’ parameter - defines the time between network port becoming ‘up’ and restoring user port link up CPE Switches to alternative path Packet Switched Network Eth/IP/MPLS CPE E-NTU X X

  21. Diagnostic Loopbacks • Layer 1 Loopback – ETX loopbacks traffic from Rx to Tx • Out of service – disrupts service • Cannot traverse Ethernet bridge • Supported on any ETX port • Performed on all traffic of the ETX port • Loopback activation is via management not OAM protocol • Layer 2 Loopback – ETX loopbacks traffic and swaps MAC Addresses *V3.5 • ETX replaces Source Address with Destination Address • Can traverse Ethernet bridges • Performed per VLAN (or EVC) Tester No Layer L2 Loopback ETX Tester With Layer L2 Loopback

  22. Device Management • Management Connectivity • V.24 craft port • IP address for management • Out of Band Ethernet Port • Dedicated Management VLAN • Telnet • Management interface • Terminal • Configurad • SNMP • RADView Lite
