Year 5 Dorset Fieldtrip Friday 10th – Sunday 12th June 2011
Purpose of this Meeting • Where? • Why? • What?
Where? Leeson House Field Studies Centre Langton Matravers Near Swanage
Leeson House • Owned and run by Dorset County Council • A specialist field studies centre converted from a boarding school 45 years ago
Accommodation • The accommodation has all been recently refurbished is of a very high standard. • Amongst other things there are: 2 comfortable lounges, a large games room with coffee bar and shop, 11 students bedrooms and 4 staff bedrooms
Accommodation cont… We will be sharing Leeson House with another school. However, the childrens rooms will all be separate and as close together as possible. Room sizes vary and we will soon be asking the children for a list of people they would and wouldn’t like to share with in order for us to concoct a suitable room plan.
Why are we going? • During meetings held last year many parents requested a short residential trip to help prepare their children for the Year 6 trip to Wales • Fieldwork is a fundamental part of Geography and by actually seeing the features and processes studied in class their understanding will be significantly enhanced • For many children it will be their first trip away from home without parents and is therefore a big step in both growing up and having more freedom & responsibilities.
Friday 10th June 2011 • Setting off from Cokethorpe after registration at approx. 9:00am and travel to Leeson House in 2 school minibuses • Arrive and unpack at around 11:30am then eat a packed lunch (provided by the school) before heading to Studland South beach
Friday 10th June 2011 • Walking from Old Harry Rocks to Swanage, looking how the geology of the area shapes the land and making field sketches. • We will then return to Leeson House for dinner and follow that with a Geology workshop where the children can get ‘hands-on’ with the rocks and fossils they saw earlier
Friday 10th June 2011 • We will then walk from the centre to a view point above Dancing Ledge (famous for dolphin spotting!) before returning at around 9:30pm for supper and bed.
Saturday 11th June 2011 • After eating breakfast at 8:30am we will head out by minibus to the World Heritage Site of Durdle Dor and throughout the day follow a walk to Lulworth Cove stopping to study Man O War Cove and Stair Hole en-route
Saturday 11th June 2011 • We will then return to Leeson House for supper which will be followed by first an orienteering challenge and then various team building games.
Sunday 12th June 2011 • We are aiming to leave Leeson House around 9:15am and hence returning your beloved around 11:45am just in time for Sunday Lunch!
‘What do they need to bring?’ • A couple of changes of ‘sensible’ clothing • Walking boots/trainers • A raincoat • A small rucksack for taking into the field • A water bottle • A wallet/purse with maximum of £5 for spending in tuck shop/ice cream van • Sun cream? • A towel • Ipods/DS’s etc. are allowed for the journeys but will be collected in by staff and stored whilst there Please make sure things are named!
