Lab Safety Notes If fire errupts, notify the teacher. Approved eye protection devices (goggles) are worn in the laboratory any time chemicals, heat or glassware are used. If you do not understand a direction or part of a laboratory procedure, you should ask the teacher before proceeding. After completing an experiment, all chemical wastes should be disposed according to your teacher’s directions.
Notes (2) If you have been injured in the laboratory , you should FIRST tell your teacher. Long hair should always be tied back or kept entirely out of the way with a hair band, etc. You should not wear loose clothing, dangling jewelry or sandals during a laboratory experiment. Horseplay, practical jokes, or pranks in the classroom are always against the rules.
Notes (3) When handling animals, students should open cages only with permission, not tease or handle animals roughly, and report bites or scratches to the teacher immediately. If a piece of equipment is not working properly, stop, turn it off and tell the teacher. When you finish working with chemicals, biological specimens and other lab substances, always wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water.
Notes (4) You may not eat, drink or chew gum in the laboratory. When using a razor blade or scalpel, always cut material away from you. Before you leave the science room, you should clean your work area and equipment and return equipment to the proper storage area. Be able to draw a diagram to locate the fire blanket, fire extinguisher, exits, eyewash (sink) and waste disposal.
Notes (5) You should treat all chemicals as though they are hazardous. Work areas should be kept clean and tidy. Do not start any lab work until your teacher tells you to do so. Never take any chemicals or specimens out of the laboratory. Always carry a microscope with two hands.
Notes (6) Read all lab procedures before you begin. No unauthorized experiments may be conducted! You may not enter preparation/storage areas without permission from your teacher. Do not pick up broken glass with your hands – ever! Never leave a lit burner unattended.
