  3. For NIH opportunities, who must be registered in eRA Commons? • ApplicantOrganizations • Designate Signing Official (SO) • Project Directors/Principal Investigators (PD/PIs) • Register through SO or other account administrator

  4. How long should an applicant allow for registrations to be completed? • Plan for 4 weeks or more (especially if new business or business structure has changed) • eRA Commons “good faith” effort is 2 weeks

  5. What software is needed to submit grant applications through Grants.gov to NIH? • Adobe Reader • Version compatible with Grants.gov forms • PDF conversion program for attachments

  6. How do you submit an investigator-initiated or unsolicited application? • Use “Parent” announcement for your chosen activity code

  7. Where would you find any special instructions for a specific opportunity? • In the full announcement text of the Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA)

  8. Where do you find the submission deadline dates for a FOA? • In the full announcement text of the FOA • Also, note Open date when systems begin accepting applications

  9. How do you know which forms listed as “Optional” in the application package must be submitted? • Read the application guide included with the application package

  10. How do you know which additional form fields are required by NIH? • Read the application guide included with the application package • Look for field instructions with HHS logo

  11. Name a form field that is required for NIH applications, but not marked required on the federal-wide forms. • Project Performance Site Location – primary site DUNS • R&R Sr./Key Profile – Credential (all with PD/PI role) and Organization (all Sr./Key)

  12. How do you determine which budget form is appropriate for your application? • Read the application guide associated with the application package

  13. When the instructions in the FOA and application guide conflict which one wins? The FOA instructions win over the application guide

  14. What format should be used for all attachments within the application? • PDF

  15. Does the “Check Package for Errors” button at the top of the Adobe forms identify all errors & warnings? • NO- only a subset of Grants.gov errors • Some Grants.gov and all NIH business rules are checked after the form is submitted to Grants.gov

  16. Who can submit grant applications to Grants.gov? • Authorized Organization Representatives (AORs)

  17. Who can track application status in Grants.gov? • AORs • The “Track My Application” feature can be used by anyone that has the Grants.gov tracking number

  18. Who can track application status in eRA Commons? • SOs • PD/PI • ASST (must be delegated authority by PD/PI)

  19. Who receives Grants.gov e-mail notifications? • Authorized Organization Representatives (AORs) • E-mail address Grants.gov has on file for AOR

  20. Who receives eRA e-mail notifications? • The three e-mail addresses on the SF 424 (R&R) cover: • Contact (box 5) • PD/PI (box 14) • AOR (box 19)

  21. What are the key elements of “on-time” submission? • All registrations completed • Error-free application submitted by 5:00 p.m. local time on due date • All corrective submissions must be completed by the deadline As of May 2012, CCR services are now managed through SAM.gov

  23. How long do applicants have to check their application image in Commons before it moves forward for further processing by NIH staff? • Two (2) business days after image assembled and posted in eRA Commons • Known as “application viewing window”
