INTRODUCTION “Mental health” is a state of well-being in which an individual realizes his or her own abilities,can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and is able to make a contribution to his or her community. -WHO
The Govt. of India Launched the National Mental Health Programmed(NMHP)in 1982,keeping in view the heavy burden of mental illness in the community and the absolute inadequacy of mental health care infrastructure in the country to deal with it.
AIMS: • Prevention and treatment of mental and neurological disorders and their associated disabilities. • Use of mental health technology to improve general health services. • Application of mental health principles to improve quality of life.
OBJECTIVES: • To ensure availability and accessibility of minimum Mental health for all the population, particularly to the most vulnerable and underprivileged section of population. • To encourage application of mental health knowledge in general health care and in the social development.
CONTI… • To promote community participation in the mental health services developmet,and to stimulate efforts towards self help in the community. • To prevent and to treat psychiatry disorder’s. • To apply mental health principles for improving quality of life for entire population.
STRATERGIES ARE: • Integration of mental health with primary health care through NMHP. • Provision of tertiary care institution for treatment of mental disorders. • Eradicating stigmatization of mentally ill patients and protecting their rights through regulatory institutions like, the central Mental Authority ,and State Mental Authority.

DISTRICT MENTAL HEALTH PROGRAMME(DMHP) Launched in under NMHP in the year 1996(in 12th five year plan), DMHP was based on “Bellary Model "with the following components; • Early detection and treatment. • Training. • Public education. • Providing valuable data and experience at the level of community to the State and Center .
THRUST AREAS FOR 10TH FIVE YEAR PLAN • District mental health programme in an enlarged and more effective form covering the entire country. • Streamlining/ modernization of mental hospital in order to modify their present custodial role. • Upgrading dept. Of psychiatry in medical colleges and enhancing the psychiatric content of medical curriculum at the undergraduate as well as postgraduate level.
d. Strengthening the central and state mental authorities with a permanent secretariat. e. Research and training in the field of community
REVISED NATIONAL MENTAL HEALTH PROGRAMME • Redesigning the DMHP around a modal institution a zonal medical college. • Strengthening medical colleges to improve psychiatric treatments facilities with adequate manpower. • .

Involvement of private sectors and voluntary organization in provision of mental health care services at community. • At district level mental health team has to be posted to clinical care and the integration of mental health at peripheral institutions. • Services are focused to special section of high risk population prone for stressful disorders.
