Conclusions • More knowledge is needed about parents with intellectual disability and the contexts in which they are living. • Extended education about sex and social life is necessary required. • The achievments must be performed promptly and easily comprehensible to the target group. • The achievements have to be co-ordinated. • Family perspective. • Consultative team, co-operation, development, parenthood. • Common education for professionals.

  3. Purpose of the project Target • Achieving a better lifequality for children and adults in families where at least one of the parents has an intellectual disability. • Target group • Parents with intellectual disability and their children.

  4. Method • Survey of the number of families with disability problems in a certain area in southern part of Sweden. • Starting groups with parents, holding speach and activities. • In each single case promote that the children and their parents get the needed coaching and support by the welfareofficer. • In co-operation with other professional participants implement the result in daily activities.

  5. United Nations´ Child Convention • The convention is based on four core principles. • Prohibition against discrimination. • The best for the child above all. • The right to lifesurvival and development. • The right to express ones opinion.

  6. United Nations Standard rule number 9 • Family life and personal integrity. • Persons with disabilities should have the possibility to live with their families. • Persons with disabilities must not be denied the possibility to sexual experieces or to become parents. There must be necessary advice.

  7. Preconditions for the children • Co-operating network, both personal and professional. • Parents who want to receive help. • Support starting early. • Method development, e.g group activities for children. • Help for parents with social and economic difficulties. • One child families.

  8. Preconditions for the parents • Early intervention. • Support during pregnancy, delivery and after the child is born. • Conversation and activity groups. • Co-ordinated efforts from professionals. • Support with social and economic difficulties.
