Budget Strategies for Impending Shortfall • Increasing outside income • Shifting to less costly activities or innovating to create niche • Increasing efficiencies to reduce costs • Staying flexible • Creating Visibility
Increasing outside income • Increase in sponsored research $$ • up 33% in past year • Higher salary replacement amounts • more F & A (ICR) • Federal grants to support education & student scholarships • acquisition of $1,046,94 in non-research grants this year (mostly from HRSA)
Increasing outside income: • Reinforce standard: faculty goal to generate 40% of income – practice or research • Strengthen NIH-type research supports– office of research facilitation, guide faculty salary support written into grants, think tanks, mock reviews, mentoring teams, grant information broker
Increasing outside income: • Market cohort educational degree programs • RN-BSN program – on-site – U of Chicago • Administrative Nursing leadership certificate – Advocate Good Samaritan, U. of Chicago, ++ • School nurse certificate program • Post-masters NP certificate • Market professional development education & consulting products through the CON Institute for Healthcare Innovation • E.g. Academy for frontline nursing manager
Shifting to less costly initiatives • Higher cost = generic UG program (downsize) – expand to graduate entry (waiting list = 400 students) • Lower cost = RN-BSN program (revitalize) • Higher cost = advanced practice nurse (NP, CNS, CNM) master’s program (right-size) • Lower cost = systems specialists master’s program (health informatics, administrative leadership) (up-size) • Shift to clinical practice doctorate (cost neutral)
Increasing efficiencies to reduce costs • Partnering for cost sharing: • Practice: UI Nursing & Healthcare Associates deliver primary care at site where members come to receive rehab care for persistent mental illness (do not have overhead) • Teaching: Negotiate with health systems to provide practicum supervision • Creating core – e.g., across master’s emphases – to reduce redundancies • with other colleges & schools
Staying flexible • Diversifying: - mix of tenured/able, research and clinical professorial ranks • Avoid lock-ins - Hire assistant professors or faculty outside of tenure rank • Integrating teaching, research & practice: e.g., hire part-time on state & find opportunities for position $$ supplement – practice, research, or professional development activities through the IHI – (consulting, CE, direct practice contracting)
