The End by artist Heather Phillipson (British, 1978)
Originally executed in 1841 to hold a statue of William IV, The Fourth Plinth of Trafalgar Square (the north-westerly plinth) for more than 150 years remained empty. But in 1998, a solution was found. The plinth would serve as a showpiece for a changing display of contemporary art. Since 1999, 12 artworks, including those by Rachel Whiteread, Mark Wallinger and Bill Woodrow, have taken up temporary residence on it, funded by the Mayor of London and the Arts Council England. ‘THE END’ by Heather Phillipson will be on display on the plinth until spring 2022
