  1. Monastery Beach (Mortuary Beach, San Jose Creek Beach), California, United States Monastery Beach, also known as Mortuary Beach and San Jose Creek Beach, is a popular arch-shaped beach in Monterey County's Carmel-by-the-Sea, part of Carmel River State Beach. This beach, with its wide stretch of light brown, coarse sand, sits adjacent to the Carmelite Monastery, from which it gets its name. Monastery Beach offers activities such as sunbathing, beachcombing, wildlife watching, fishing, and scuba diving. The beach is not suitable for swimming due to dangerous rip currents and sneaker waves, earning it the nickname Mortuary Beach. However, it is a favorite spot for experienced scuba divers, who explore the diverse underwater life, including rockfish, bass, lingcod, and anemones. Marine mammals like seals, sea lions, dolphins, and migrating whales are also seen seasonally. The beach’s rich marine life makes it a great fishing spot. Accessing Monastery Beach is straightforward, with the entrance near 27951 California State Highway 1, where free parking is available. Nearby attractions include Garland Ranch Regional Park, known for its oak woodlands, redwood forests, and historical sites, and the Tor House and Hawk Tower, built by poet Robinson Jeffers. Art lovers can visit the Park Gallery Carmel, showcasing works by artists like Michael Mao and Karen Budan. For dining, options include Seventh & Dolores Steakhouse for steaks and seafood, La Bicyclette for Californian-European fusion cuisine, and Tommy’s Wok for Hunan, Szechuan, and Mandarin dishes. Nearby hotels include the 4-star L’Auberge Carmel, the 3-star Tradewinds Carmel, and the budget-friendly 2-star Carmel Inn & Suites, all offering various amenities to suit different budgets.
