Workshops and courses to support development of workforce planning skills • Workshops and courses • 1 and 2 day courses for example: • 1 day workshop - Introduction to Workforce Planning • ½ day workshop – Workforce planning for commissioners • 2 day course – Train the Trainer • 2 day workforce planning courses • Examples of workshops held in the North East this year: • 1 x 1 day workshops (July) • 1 x ½ day workshop for commissioners
Data Modelling • 3 day course • Accredited by University of Leeds (Level 7 - 15 credits) • Target audience • Those involved in workforce planning who need to develop their knowledge and understanding of demand and supply modelling and activity analysis. • Aim • To provide the opportunity to learn from expert analysts and planners, and to learn how to access a variety of tools and resources which enable the development of robust, evidence based workforce plans.
Leading and Developing Clinical teams • 5 day programme over 6 months • Delivered jointly with and accredited by Thames Valley University (Level 7 – 30 credits) • Target audience - Junior doctors just going into first consultant post or GP principles • 2nd cohort commences in January 2011 • Aims • Enhance the competence and confidence of clinical leaders and provide opportunity for them to focus on current service/pathway priorities • Help medical staff achieve personal development targets • Enable participants to network with other clinical leaders within the region and develop agreed strategies for managing staff and leading change • To develop clinical leaders of the future and embed clinical engagement in workforce change and development
Building workforce planning capability • 5 day programme delivered over 6 months • Accredited by Thames Valley University (Level 7 – 20 credits) • Target audience – those who require an in-depth knowledge of workforce planning at operational level – pitched between Introduction to WP and PG Certificate in Strategic Workforce Planning. • Based on successful programme commissioned by NHS West Midlands (6 cohorts) • National cohort commences November 2010. Aim: • Understanding and using an effective framework for integrated workforce planning (Six Steps Methodology) • Utilising workforce data and information effectively • The role of patient pathway approaches to workforce design and tools to support this process (eg process mapping) • Creative approaches to workforce design and development, including leadership and change management
Post Graduate Certificate in Strategic Workforce Planning • 1 year course • Workshops, assignments and work based activity • 6th cohort now recruiting – closing date 5th November • The objectives of the programme are to enable workforce planners to: • Connect and integrate the workforce planning function to service and financial planning • Respond to the complex nature of planning required to deliver the plurality of service provision • Move the focus away from short term planning to medium and longer term strategic planning • Enable consistency of approach in equipping organisation with workforce planning skills • Raise the profile and improve perceptions of the role of workforce planning amongst planning colleagues
Tailored /bespoke programmes • Tailored versions of national programmes e.g. Introduction to Workforce Planning workshops, Train the Trainer, Capability and Capacity building workshops • Bespoke programmes of work e.g. care pathway planning workshops, 2 day practical workshops • Examples of bespoke programme in North East • University Hospital North Tees • 4 x ½ day sessions • 3 x 2 day programmes • 1 x Train the Trainer (9th and 10th November)
Workforce Planning Competences All programme are linked to the Workforce Planning Competences which cover: • Prepare for workforce planning • Assess workforce demand and supply • Develop, implement and review plans • Collect, analyse and present data and informaton to support workforce planning • Service change and innovation • Partnership and collaborative work • Personal and people development • Equality, diversity and rights • Management of resources
Six Steps Methodology to Integrated Workforce Planning • All programmes and workshops are developed around this methodology • Adopted by social care and local authorities and NHS Scotland • Six Steps are: • Defining the plan • Mapping service change • Defining the required workforce • Understanding workforce availability • Developing an action plan • Implement, monitor and refresh
