The Concept • Collaborative effort to support and improve existing efforts in science and technology education • Mobile platform for encouraging interest in science and technology with an emphasis on underserved youth • A blueprint for expansion anywhere improvements to science and technology education are desired

  4. The Vision Cultivates student interest in K-12 with hands-on exposure to technology Develops educator skills in K-12 and supports capacity building Location independent access to resources enabling distance education Demonstration project for state-wide model

  6. Digital Bus Projects More than just a field trip!

  7. The Technology • Mobile science laboratory • Environmental observation & measurement equipment (water testing, motion detection equipment, binoculars) • Microscopes • Graphing calculators • Imaging – digital video / digital cameras • Laptop computers (Apple & PC platforms) • GPS devices

The History • March 2004 Inception/August 2004 Operational • Wireless Initiative (proprietary wireless network stood up in Spring 2005 to allow field site access to the internet) • Focus expanded to capacity building in Fall 2005 by enhancing educator skills through professional development offerings • Replication effort also tested in 05/06 school year with the Konawaena Complex (Big Island) • The Maui Digital Bus currently serves students all over the island of Maui & soon Molokai!

The Outcomes To Date • 69 school projects completed • 26 schools participated • 13 community organization collaborations • 77 educator participants in professional development • 8 custom curriculum modules developed specific to Hawaii’s environment plus multiple custom labs • Over 3300 student participants!

  10. The Road Ahead • Strengthen sustainment resources • Expand capacity building focus • Continue focus on underserved populations • Demonstrate replication with community organization
