    1. The ING Bank Building: Integrated Building Design Amsterdam, The Netherlands

    3. Overview of Green Design Elements Whole Building Design Approach Collaboration across various disciplines Daylighting Maximize use of natural light Building Envelope Control energy flow between inside and outside of the building Passive Solar and Cogeneration Utilize passive solar, passive cooling, and waste heat for HVAC Other Innovations Flow-forms, landscaping, and art

    4. Whole Building Design Approach Design team with individuals representing multiple aspects of design work together realize synergistic benefits Integrate building components and systems to save energy and protect the environment Lower costs through combining design components Ex) Insulating windows, increase costs when purchased alone, but can downplay necessity of other costly elements

    5. Daylighting 10 slanted towers instead of one 538,000 square foot monolithic building Maximizes perimeter daylight Offsets electric load No desk can be more than 23 feet from a window Increases productivity, less strain on eyes Light shelves, high reflectance materials Increase useful illumination provided by standard window bounce daylight entering the top third of each exterior window onto the ceiling of office spaces Incorporates reflective art onto ceilings and in atriums

    6. Building Envelopes Consists of the building’s roof, walls, windows, and doors and controls the flow of energy between the inside and outside of the building Precast concrete structure sheathed with insulation and then covered with brick Allows for passive solar heating Goal is low conductivity Double-glazed windows intercept solar radiation, prevent infrared and UV transmission but still allow for good visibility Can absorb or reflect desired wavelengths glazings that allow tinting to increase under direct sunlight and decrease as light levels decrease

    7. Passive Solar, Passive Cooling and Cogeneration Uses building components and materials to provide solar collection, heat storage, and heat distribution On-site cogeneration facility to heat a 26,420 gallon hot water storage system that connects to hydronic radiators that help distribute heat throughout the building Recovers waste heat to generate power Passive cooling through mechanical and natural ventilation Back-up absorption chillers Powered by cogeneration heat to mix with chemical solution to deliver chilled water through pipes to cool air

    8. Other Innovations Flow-forms Water throughout building, provides oxygen, soothing sounds Integration of Art Landscaping Use of natural materials

    9. Costs and Benefits Green design elements added 700,000 to total cost (53 million) Amount was paid back within first three months of building operation Energy savings of 92% each year Amounts to 2.4 million dollar savings Absenteeism down 15% Huge cost benefits New image for bank “ING is now seen as a progressive, creative bank, and the bank’s business has grown dramatically” Climbed from number 4 to number 2 bank in Netherlands

    10. Conclusion Initial goals met Shows that green building does not have to be expensive Focus on inter-discipline collaboration Questions?
