PRESENTATION ATATF USERS’ MEETING – APRIL 4-6, 2007 LAserCyclotron (AutoResonance) Accelerator LACARA is the only vacuum accelerator that can accelerate a non-pre-bunched beam, with all particles receiving nearly-equal energy gains.
PRESENTATION ATATF USERS’ MEETING – APRIL 4-6, 2007 So what is planned for after the LACARA experiments described yesterday by Sergey? A three-stage program for three-to-five more years is anticipated: A. Increase energy gain using more CO2 laser power. (MeV) 65 MeV, 5.2 T 50 MeV, 6.2 T 35 MeV, 8.4 T TW of laser power B. Create a beam of femtosecond bunches by chopping. C. Build an optical-scale high-gradient wake field accelerator driven by the train of fs sheet bunches.
PRESENTATION ATATF USERS’ MEETING – APRIL 4-6, 2007 Portrait of beam emerging from LACARA (using emittance filter) x-y (time integrated) x-t (fixed y) After the LACARA magnet, accelerated particles move on inclined rectilinear orbits, cycling at 2.9 x 1013 Hz, or about 30 revolutions in each picosecond.
PRESENTATION ATATF USERS’ MEETING – APRIL 4-6, 2007 Create chopped beam using beam stop with small aperture A beam stop of 2-cm thick tungsten, with a 1-mm diameter inclined hole, allows transmission of crisply-chopped fs microbunches once each optical cycle. N holes located at 360/N can create micro-bunches at the N th optical harmonic.
PRESENTATION ATATF USERS’ MEETING – APRIL 4-6, 2007 Create a train of fs, pC sheet bunches using a quadrupole, and inject the beam into a micron-scale planar dielectric structure to generate intense wake fields for acceleration of a test bunch sheet beam is 10’s of µm x 3 mm planar dielectric structure
PRESENTATION ATATF USERS’ MEETING – APRIL 4-6, 2007 Calculated wake fields for injection of one-to-ten 1 pC sheet bunches (10µ x 150µ x 1µ) into a micro-structure of height (width) 150µ (19µ), and gap width of 15µ. Dielectric constant = 3.0 (NaCl or BaF2) with low infrared losses. one bunch (~60 MeV/m) two bunches (~120 MeV/m) three bunches (~180 MeV/m) ten bunches (~600 MeV/m)
PRESENTATION ATATF USERS’ MEETING – APRIL 4-6, 2007 Summary: • There is life after near-term LACARA experiments, first to exploit maximum available laser power at ATF to obtain energy doubling, e.g. 40 MeV 80 MeV, or maybe more. • Insertion of a W chopper into the beam after LACARA can create a train of ~20-100 crisply chopped fs, pC bunches, at intervals equal to the laser period or sub-multiples of it. • These bunches can be focused/defocused by a quadrupole into a train of micron-scale sheet bunches for injection into a micron-scale planar dielectric structure, to generate wake fields of 100’s of MeV/m, maybe as high as 1 GeV/m. • LACARA-ology can have an exciting future at ATF for years to come, in the humble opinion of the speaker.
