Pre-History • Pre-history: time before writing systems were developed and people began recording events • We figure out pre-history through clues and then make (and constantly revise) theories • Archeologists: study material remains (such as fossil relics, artifacts, and monuments) of past human life and activities • Anthropologists: study human beings; interpret an archeologist’s findings to figure out what the people in the past thought and believed.
Time Periods • Old Stone Age: Paleolithic • 2 million- 12,000 BCE • Middle Stone Age: Mesolithic • 12,000- 8,000 BCE • New Stone Age: Neolithic • 8,000- 5,000 BCE
Lost! • Our class got permission to go on a fabulous field trip to the Bermuda Triangle. On the way there, we crash landed on a deserted island. • To survive, we must eat. What do we do?
Hunter-Gatherers • Earliest and easiest way to eat • It took time to find food and hunter-gatherers had to always be on the move, but it didn’t require fancy tools or (necessarily) fire • Nomad= person without a permanent home who constantly moves in search of resources • Applied to EVERYONE until about 8,000 years ago
Agricultural Revolution • Domestication: to adapt a plant or animal so that it can be used or cultivated by human beings • Importance • Increased health and life spans greatly • People could now settle into communities instead of constantly pursing food • Surplus of food -> surplus of labor -> • Governmental structures • Artisan class • Merchant class • Writing systems
Domestication of Animals • Dogs were first and helped with hunting • Goats were used for milk and meat • Horses, cows, pigs, sheep and chickens! • Pros: Brought a steady supply of food and labor • Cons: Had to feed them and caused human diseases like small pox and the flu
