  2. The Problem • What is the sound of this thing called CRITICAL THINKING

  3. EVALUATION

  4. The 2 dimensions of the problem 1. What the learner hears and thinks when hearing “This course encourages critical thinking.” 2. The learner’s often deep-seated desire to appear “nice” to others.

  5. Suggested Solutions • 1. Reframe critical thinking as “improved thinking.” No one wants to be used or manipulated. Critical thinking can help.

  6. 2. Structure critical thinking around the act of asking questions, rather than making claims about the thinking of others. The tone and potential innocence of a question can keep the conversation going. Critical thinking can advance our understanding.

  7. 3. Use the growing literature about the lubricating effect of making mistakes to encourage risk-taking. AlinaTugend, Better By Mistake: The Unexpected Benefits of Being Wrong. David Freedman, Why Experts keep Failing Us.

  8. 4. Highlight metaphors describing those who do not ask critical questions as a habit. Those metaphors are not pretty.

  9. 5. Share personal stories of when you needed critical thinking, but instead relied on Kahneman’s “fast thinking.” • A. My choice of college • My choice of a major when in college • My choice of a doctor for my dehydrated child • On and on

  10. And finally Critical thinking would have been most helpful in my being curious about what goats like to do with their horns once you stop stroking them.
