Warm-Up, Friday 1/21 • What connections can you make between Germany’s aggression towards non-Germanic people and the Japanese aggression towards the Chinese? Give specific examples. • Are the motives for the Germans and Japanese “need” for expansion similar or different? Explain.
Appeasement in Europe • Munich Conference • Hitler “re-unified” lost land of Austria • Wanted Czechoslovakia to do the same • Sept. 29, 1938 • Reps from Britain, France, Italy and Germany met to prevent another war • Leaders of Britain and France gave in to Hitler’s demands • Thought if they conceded, war would be avoided. • Appeasement: • Giving concessions in exchange for peace.
Appeasement fails….Europe goes to War! • May, 1939 • Hitler prepares his army to invade Poland • Violates Munich conference agreement • August, 1939 • Germany and USSR sign a non-aggression pact • Britain and France are shocked and prepare for war. WHY? • September 1, 1939 • Germany invades Poland from the east, USSR from the West • Sept. 3, 1939 • France and Britain declare war on Germany, WWII BEGINS!
