OPENING SEQUENCE:Horror MIDSOMMER
Narrative • Opening scene of the sequence is firefighter turning the key in a car and at first the location is unknow but in the next shot as it zooms out we can see its set in a garage with two cars- setting the scene for the scene and the narrative • Flashes of red light from the fire engine- connote death or murder as red can be linked to blood • Enter the house and leave the chaotic garage into the empty house (two firefighters in the bulky uniform)- juxtaposition of the two atmospheres • Pipes that the firefighters are following add suspense to the narrative as they a following them through the house and we are wondering where they are going • Walk into the bedroom and zip up a dead couple being zipped into a bag- wonder how they died , who they are and make us wonder how it connects to the narrative • As they leave the room another body is discovered by the camera and she is sitting dead against the desk with the red lights flashing in the background symbolizing death- makes us think that a murder has gone on making the audience ask questions • The pipe from the car that was going through all the house was duct tape to the girls mouth showing that she was gassed by the car fumes and that’s how they died by being gassed from the car fumes. • There is an extreme close up to the laptop and the notification that says ‘4 new messages from Dani Ardor” – makes us wonder who Dani Ardor is and if he is involved or he know anyone who was involved also it could have been the last person who had seen the family before they were murdered • A person walking on the street hearing the cries of the women – could be related to the people who were murdered • The women who is being held is screeching and crying showing her emotional trauma and connotes that she could be morning the dead people and it all you can focus on at the end of the opening sequence • There is a zoom out into the dark sky – darkness could connote death and murder ( loss of a loved one ) and the rain could symbolize a sad event and it is a horrible weather that ruins people day
TARGET AUDIENCE • 18- 35 year old would be the targeted age • No gender preference for movie • More psychological horror then a scary physical horror • People who are mre intelligent and into slowapaced horror movies
kEY CONVENTIONS OF hORROR • Muder which is a key theme- 3 people are dead by being gassed- twisted way to die which fits into to horror theme • Chaotic with fire engine , flashing lights and they was law enforcement there due to the crime which is typical of horror movies • Screaming and crying of the women – twisted and eerie as it was a blood curdling cry which makes your skin crawl • Its set at night- atmosphere fit the stereotypical mood of a horror movie as its always filmed at night
kEY MOMENTS CAMERA WORK SOUND • Panning motion and tacking shot to reveal the dead bodies - a slow reveal which build up tension and suspense u till the full reveal (couple were filmed as well in birdeye view) • Extreme close up of the car with the pipe and then the shot of it attached to the women mouth showing how they were killed • The non digetic sound of srecchingvioling – haunting and eerie • Music is very repetitive and feel like it is on a loop – similar to alarm bell that is going off like the WW raid sirens • Digetic sound- women cry (the only diegetic sound that is in the scene)- it shows that she is ging through loss or pain so maybe she knew the family that had died in the scenebefore
Editing • Slow motion- the whole opening sequence is in slow motion this build the tension and suspense as you want to know what ahs happened and why there are fire fighters until it slowly get revealed at the end • Opening fades from black- black could sybolise the death that has occurred in the house
conclusion • I think it is a good opening sequence for a horror movie but it is not stereotypical and is very slow paced • It not very scary and it not the most gripping intro but it is more of a psychological horror so it messes with you mind more and makes you think. • Non traditional horror- not very gruesome death, not a lot of blood, very clean murder scene
