Osteopathic Philosophy and Principles (OPP) • Osteopathic: A system of medicine based on the theory that disturbances in the musculoskeletal system affect other bodily parts, causing many disorders that can be corrected by various manipulative techniques in conjunction with conventional medical, surgical, pharmacological, and other therapeutic procedures. • American Heritage Dictionary • Philosophy: clarifies and justifies • Principles: prescribe action based upon philosophy

Osteopathic Distinctiveness • D.O.s and M.D.s are fully qualified physicians licensed to practice all areas of medicine and surgery • D.O.s and M.D.s can choose to practice in any specialty area of medicine
Osteopathic Distinctiveness (cont.) • D.O.s, however, receive extra training in the musculoskeletal system and it’s relationship to health and disease • D.O.s practice osteopathic manipulative treatment when indicated to improve musculoskeletal function, tissue health, and promote maximum fluid motion: arterial, venous, and lymphatic; while chiropractic doctors (D.C.s) perform adjustments for the vertebrae, spinal cord, and spinal nerves
