Acting Manuel Flores English IV Mrs. Saunders
HISTORY • The History of acting follows the history of mankind • What began as storytelling by cavemen eventually turned into an actual profession • The Egyptians had many religious ceremonies which resembled modern plays • The Greeks are commonly referred to as the father of theatre • The first actual actor was Thespis • a Greek who stepped away from the chorus
Research • The Greeks would have many festivals each year to worship Dionysus, the god of wine and fertility as well as theatre • These festivals would showcase a trilogy of tragedy and one comedy by a playwright • As the plays became more and more famous, so did the theatre experience • Theatre thrived under the Greeks and continued to grow until the Dark Ages, when the church declared the theatre a sin • It wasn’t until hundreds of years later when the church was looking for a way to reach the masses that they decided theatrical performances were a good idea
