  2. The Manhattan Project This was the code name for the development of the first atomic weapon. This was created mainly by the United States, with help from the United Kingdom as well as Canada. The Project took place from 1942-1946.

  4. Los Alamos, New Mexico The first atomic test was done in Los Alamos, New Mexico on July 16, 1945. The Explosion was the equilivent of 20,000 tons of TNT. Select the above link for a detailed account of the first bomb.

  5. Little boy was the first atomic bomb dropped on Japan. It was approximate 9’8” long and 24” in diameter.The uranium enriched bomb killed approximately 140,000 Japanese

  6. Fat man was the 2nd atomic weapon to be dropped on Japan. Although it is larger in size than Little Boy, the destruction was not as great.

  7. Japan Surrenders to the United States on September 2, 1945. They met on the USS Missouri in the Middle of Tokyo Bay. This marked the end of the Second World War.
