Work performed this week • ONE OR MORE SLIDES, LIST ONLY THE “BOTTOM LINE” OF EACH BULLET • List here the tasks performed to reach the goals, e.g.: • used Web of Science, Weldasearch, Google Scholar • Keywords in Web of Science: • “weld penetration” 15023 hits • “weld penetration” AND GMAW 3472 hits • Keywords in Weldasearch: • etc. • went to the library and made copies of 23 papers (bring Prof. Mendez a copies) • downloaded 40 papers (bring Prof. Mendez a copies) • selected references from the papers’ citations • went to the library again and copied 21 more papers • downloaded 18 more papers

Results • ONE SLIDE, LIST ONLY THE “BOTTOM LINE” OF EACH BULLET • There are two outcomes to a good week of work: • there’s something to show • or there’s confusion and/or blocking • If there’s something to show, then show it in a succinct way, e.g.: • “I have 102 papers to skim over” • If there is confusion or blocking, that’s OK. Then we need to trace from the last thing that was clear until where confusion/blocking started, e.g.: • “I looked into Web of Science with no problem, but couldn’t figure out how to select the most important papers” • Results should be given in order of significance (most significant first) • Long tables and groups of graphs go in an appendix

Analysis and Discussion • ONE SLIDE, LIST ONLY THE “BOTTOM LINE” OF EACH BULLET • Here is where you tell me something intelligent about your findings, for example: • “Of the 102 papers I have I noticed that almost everybody references papers by Shimada” • “Many references appear in a journal we do not have in the library” • Compare results with theoretical expectations • Account for anything unexpected • Explain sources of error • Note important problems encountered

Goals for next week • ONE SLIDE, LIST ONLY THE “BOTTOM LINE” OF EACH BULLET • Goal 1: build Endnote database • Goal 2: skim over papers • Goal 3: detect general themes • Goal 4: group papers according to themes • (no need to include motivation or relationship with overall goals, you’ll do that for next week’s meeting)

Appendix • Add here long tables, or groups of graphs • You can also bring hard copies or other computer files to the meeting, but the results must be summarized in the Results section of this presentation • I strongly suggest that you include your figures and tables in this presentation as much as you can. This is going to be very convenient when is time to write your thesis. The best way to import figures and graphs is using Copy and Paste Special as “enhanced metafile”
