  1. Chapter 10 Day 2

  2. Null Hypothesis • The null hypothesis, H0 (H naught, or the Ho): is a statistical hypothesis that contains an equal sign. • It’s the statement being tested in a test of significance. Says that there is “no effect” or “no change” • The test of significance is designed to assess the strength of the evidence against the null hypothesis.

  3. Alternative Hypothesis • The alternative hypothesis, Ha (H sub A or the Ha) contains a statement of inequality such as ≠, <, or > • This is the effect that we suspect is true, the alternative to the “no effect” or “no change” or the null hypothesis. • Before stating the hypotheses, make sure to define what μ represents.

  4. Example 1 • Coca Cola claims that their coke bottles contain 2 liters of soda. You feel like they actually contain less because of the air pocket at the top. • State the null hypothesis. • State the alternative hypothesis.

  5. Example 2 • A university publicizes that the proportion of its students who graduate in 4 years is 82% • State the null hypothesis. • State the alternative hypothesis.

  6. Example 3 • A cereal company advertises that the mean weight of the contents of its 20 ounce size cereal boxes is more than 20 ounces. • State the null hypothesis. • State the alternative hypothesis.

  7. Try on your own… 4. A consumer analyst reports that the mean life of a certain type of automobile battery is not 74 months. 5. A television manufacturer publishes that the variance of the life of a certain type of television is less than 3.5. 6. A radio station publicizes that it’s proportion of the local listening audience is greater than 39%.
