Oh Brother! (Mother?) By: Lisa Fiedler
Review • Motherboard connects everything
Culprit: Capacitator • Job: the hold a charge and release it when needed • Failure: the goo inside gets too hot and overflows out of the top
How could this happen? • Cheap formula = stolen formula • Turns out to be the wrong one • Moral: Be sure your sins will find you out!
Symptoms • Freezing and locking up • Not starting at all • Just acting plain weird • Pop ‘er open, check for bulging or overflow • Especially check computers with 15XXX type asset tag.
Solution • Replace all bad motherboards with new motherboards • All in the school are under warranty, so new ones will be put in as they come in • Learn how to replace
Power Supply PCI/AGP Slots IDE cables Front connectors Six screws DIMM CPU fan/ CPU Removal
Metal Backing Motherboard Re-hook up Double check and close Replacement
Drivers • May need Admin rights, leave to veteran users • During startup go into BIOS, disable the onboard sound card • Save and exit • Check Device Manager for any missing drivers (Right click my computer, look around for DM, varies from version to version)
Finish • Cleanup • Double check • And you’re done! • Next
