  1. Persuasive WritingRequesting a Gift By Kay McCullough

  2. Persuasive Writing Needs to convince the reader to believe something or convince the reader to do something.

  3. The persuasive writing must have • Introduction • Body • Conclusion

  4. The introduction includes the lead sentence and the thesis statement.

  5. Your LEAD, the first sentence of your introduction, should be a HOOK to catch the reader’s attention.

  6. For example, if I wanted to convince my mother to give me an ebook for my birthday, my lead sentence might look something like this:

  7. Open with a lead sentence…a startling prediction By 2050, all people will be using e-books rather than paper books.

  8. Open with a lead sentence…a statistic 50% of kids say they want to read an ebook. 1/3 of children say they would read more with ebooks.

  9. Open with a lead sentence…an anecdote (A story snapshot) You are hoping that this time the gift is the perfect gift. You wait as the wrapping paper is slowly peeled back. You look for facial signs that someone loves the present. Will this be that perfect gift?

  10. Open with a lead sentence…a question Have you ever wondered if this was going to be that perfect gift?

  11. Open with a lead sentence…a quotationR. D. Cummingonce said, “A good book has no ending.”

  12. Your introduction must also include a THESIS STATEMENT. This is usually the last sentence of your introduction.

  13. Your thesis muststate your focused topic by including the words “should” or “should not.” • Do not use words like “In my opinion” or “I think.”

  14. According to an Amazon survey, 1/3 of children say they would read more with ebooks. Having an ebook has many benefits. So mom, you should buy me an ebook like a Nook for my birthday. Introductory Example

  15. Body The body of your paper gives EVIDENCE or reasons to support your thesis statement. This is the middle of your paper and should start with a new paragraph.

  16. Body The body should… • Include two or three paragraphs. • start each paragraph with a transition(For example: First of all, Secondly, Finally)

  17. Body • Each paragraph in the body musthave a topic sentence that states a reason to support your position. The writer should • elaborate by adding: FACTS STATISTICS RESEARCH EXAMPLES COMPARISON/CONTRAST PERSONAL EXPERIENCES

  18. Body The body shouldhave one paragraph that points out an opposing view and provides a counter argument/ answer/ rebuttal/ response to the main objection.

  19. Body Example First of all, I would read more if I had an ebook. Research shows that children who read a lot do better in school. If I read more, I would also do better in school. This would help me with my education.

  20. Secondly, I know that you think that ebooks are expensive, but they do not cost as much as you think. I would not need all of the book cases in my room that store all of the books I no longer read. All of the books would be hidden away on my ebook. We could sell the bookcases to offset the cost. Also I have heard that Amazon gives away downloads for ebooks all of the time.

  21. Finally, this is what I really want. Doesn’t it make more sense to actually give me something that I really want and will actually use? Last year you gave me a game which was really nice and I liked it, but to be honest I hardly play it. An ebook is something that I would take with me wherever I go and use all of the time.

  22. Conclusion This is your last paragraph and lets your reader know you are through writing. Start with “In conclusion.”

  23. Conclusion Restate your thesis but use different words. • Briefly restate the main points so that your reader can recall them. • Clearly state what you want readers to DO.

  24. Example In conclusion, you should purchase an ebook for my birthday. I will read more if I have an ebook. They are not that expensive in the long run. An ebook is what I really want and would really use. I have taken the guess work out of what would be the perfect gift for me, so you should buy an ebook for my birthday.

  25. Now write a letter requesting a gift. This could be a letter to Santa, your parent or an aunt. Make sure that your letter has paragraphs – an introduction, body and conclusion.
