A cell is like a factory. It has many machines inside to make it work correctly. • The “machines” in a cell are called organelles
Organelles perform functions to keep a cell healthy and alive. • They are similar to organs which perform functions to keep a body healthy and alive.
Nuclear membrane – outer covering of the nucleus, protects the nucleus
The Nucleus contains chromosomes with DNA. • The DNA determines the cell’s activities. • The DNA determines an organism’s traits.
Jobs of membrane: 1. Protection 2. Selectively Permeable – Controls what goes in and out of cell. Cell membrane – outer covering of the cell
Cytoplasm – jelly like liquid that holds all of the organelles
“Power House” of the cell. Supplies the cell with ATP energy Mitochondria
Produces proteins Ribosome
“Packing and Shipping” Pack and ship materials to other parts of the cell Golgi Bodies
“Intracellular Highway” Transport tubes Pathway of tubes that carry substances in the cell Endoplasmic Reticulum
Plant cells have 3 parts that animal cells do not. • 1. Cell wall • 2. Chloroplast • 3 Large Central Vacuole
Outer rigid protective layer of a plant cell The cell wall is outside of the cell membrane Cell Wall
Chloroplast • Has chlorophyll • Performs Photosynthesis
