Ottoman Empire • Ottoman empire lasted from 1299-1922 • At one time it was one of the largest and most powerful empires in the world.
Armenians • Two million Armenians lived in the Ottoman Empire • The Armenians became Christian in 301 AD. The rest of the Ottoman Empire was Muslim.
The “Young Turks” • In 1908 a group of militants took control of the country. These rebels were known as the “Young Turks.” • They wanted the Ottoman Empire to be exclusively Muslim. • For this to happen, they had to get rid of the Armenians.
Genocide • Between 1915 and 1923 at least 1.5 million Armenians were killed in the Ottoman empire. • Many were slaughtered. • Many were driven to the desert to starve and die of thirst. • Many came to Fresno. • The Turkish government refuses to admit that a Genocide occurred to this day.
