Holy Attitude Adjustment James 4.5-10
Introduction • I am resolved to follow the Savior, faithful and true each day, heed what He sayeth, do what He willeth; He is the living way…friends may oppose me, foes may beset me, still will I enter in.
Take-Home Truth • God yearns for our total allegiance; adjust your attitude toward that goal.
God yearns for our total allegiance, adjust your attitude toward that goal. • God yearns for our allegiance. (5-6a) • The first solution is resolve. (6b-8a) • The second solution is discipline. (8b-10)
God yearns for our allegiance. (5-6a) • I Corinthians 6.19, “Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit living within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own,” • II Corinthians 6.16, “…as God said, ‘I make my dwelling among them and walk among them, and I will be their God and they shall be my people.’”
Illustration: Soldiers and Dignitaries • Deuteronomy 6.5, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.” • “But He gives more grace”
I am resolved no longer to linger, charmed by the world’s delight. Things that are higher, things that are nobler, these have allured my sight.
Application • God yearns for our allegiance: • God ‘yearns’ for our allegiance. We should yield to this yearning and turn to the Father’s embrace.
The first solution is resolve. (6b-8a) • Resolve to put away pride and embrace humility. • Submit beforehand to God.
Decide ahead of time to resist the devil • Ben Franklin and Winston Churchill: “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.” • Our enemy is already defeated • This is why we have surety he will flee.
Move toward God and He’ll move toward you. • God doesn’t play us like marionettes.
Application • The first solution is resolve: • We cannot yield to the yearning of God for us until we resolve to align our attitudes toward Him. Resolve the allegiance before the battle.
The second solution is discipline. (8b-10) • Repent • II Chronicles 7.14, “if my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and forgive their sin and heal their land.”
Purify your motives • Isaiah 29.13, “And the Lord said: ‘Because this people draw near with their mouth and honor me with their lips, while their hearts are far from me, and their fear of me is a commandment taught by men,’”
Matthew 5.23-24, “So if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar and go. First be reconciled to your brother, and then offer your gift.”
Realize the seriousness of sin and attitude. • Ecclesiastes 12.14, “For God will bring every deed into judgment, with every secret thing, whether good or evil.” • Matthew 5.21-22, “You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment,’ But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire.”
Matthew 5.27-28, “You have heard that it was said, ‘Do not commit adultery.’ But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart.”
Hebrews 4.12b-13, “…and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. And no creature is hidden from His sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of Him to whom we must give an account.”
Humble yourselves. • John 3.30, “He must increase, but I must decrease.” • Luke 9.23, “And He said to all, ‘If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.’”
I am resolved to go to the Savior, leaving my sin and strife. He is the true one, He is the just one, He hath the words of life.
Application • The second solution is discipline: • We can have all the resolution and best intentions in the world, but if they are not coupled with discipline, we will soon fizzle out, abandon hope, or fall prey.
Conclusion • I am resolved, and who will go with me? Come, friends, without delay! Taught by the Bible, led by the Spirit, We’ll walk the heavenly way.
