Key Achievements • Centralised surgical services in Sept 2009 With out-reach and in-reach arrangements • Established and consolidated pathways • Improved HPB pathways and protocols • Implemented EMR and HALO at WHHT • Changing EUS pathway from London to local Watford service
Key Achievements (2) • 2011 Audit – Outcomes for Upper GI Specialist Unit • Excellent trial recruitment – BOSS, COG, Telovac • Participated in Local Cancer Awareness Campaign… • Peer review improvement
Some Challenges • Cancer of Unknown Primary (CUP) now part of Upper GI NSSG and requires implementation • Will minimum size for Upper GI Units increase in future making Watford unviable? • Good clinical links in place with Imperial but West Herts AHSN link is to UCLP
Other Challenges • Complete data collection for COSD • Dietetic input E&N Herts • Clinical leadership (longer term) of service at L&D (new appointment pending)
Priorities for the Future • Implementation of CUP Guidance • Development of minimally invasive surgery • Implementation of advanced recovery • Confirming optimum size of Unit and implications of this for service • Academic liaison
Finally…. Continued improvement will need Administrative support Time Funding
