  2. Basics • An Internet Service Provider (ISP) is a company that provides (sells) internet access [Comcast] • Connection options: • dial-up vs. DSL • High Speed cable • Wireless

  3. Browsers • Internet browsers are programs that allow access to the internet • Internet Explorer Chrome • Mozilla Firefox Safari • Opera

  4. URL vs. email address • www.google.com • No @ • steve@google.com • Personalized (steve) • Includes @ sign • Google.com is the domain name

  5. Website details • A web page is a document accessible through an internet browser • A web site is a collection of related web pages hosted together • http://www.google.com/accounts/TOS • Usual organization: google.com/ is the web site domain name • Accounts/TOS is the location of the page

  6. Hyperlinks • URLs are what you type, hyperlinks are what you click • hyperlink example • www.google.com

  7. Tabs vs. Windows • Tabs allow for multiple documents within one window • “mini-windows”

  8. Search Engines • Programs accessible through web browsers to search the internet for specific words or phrases

  9. Domain types • .com, .org and .net are now unregulated • .gov = government • .edu = education • Country-specific domain types • .uk, .pl, .ca

  10. Pop-ups • New web browser windows opened automatically • Almost always ads • Don’t fall for them! They want your information. • Pop-unders • Other scam ads (1,000th visitor, work for google from home, etc)

  11. Internet Child Safety • The internet is largely unregulated (unsafe!) • Filtering software exists • Flawed and expensive • 4 Rules: 1. No chat rooms 2. Only message people from real life and never allow children to meet with strangers from the internet 3. Immediately report cyber-bullying 4. Never give out personal information

Viruses and Protection • A computer virus is a program that makes copies of itself and spreads from computer to computer • Most often harmful and spread through the internet • By email, unsecured websites, ads, etc. • Antivirus software available • Norton and McAfee are good but cost • AVG Antivirus is free and works well!

  13. Scams • Phishing: a trick to get you to enter personal information such as: • Credit card information • Banking info • Social security number • Passwords • Email or physical address

  14. Phishing • You receive an email from a Nigerian prince who needs you to help get $50 million out of Nigeria. He must leave in secret and transfer the money to your account. He promises you $5 million after he gets to safety. • There probably never was a Nigerian prince, and whoever sent the email will take all your money.

  15. Password Scam • “Dear Valued PayPal Customer, You are receiving this email as a part of a security check. Someone has been accessing your PayPal account and attempting to take your money. Please verify you are the owner of this account by sending us your login name and password.” • Even if this looks exactly like a PayPal email, real companies never ask for your information over email.

  16. URL and Email Scams • Watch out for URLs like www.wellsfrago.com or wellsfargo.ebanking.com • Watch out for emails that may say “Wells Fargo” as the sender but that don’t end in @wellsfargo.com • If the URL begins with http:// and not https://, the web page is not secure! • Your password or information could be stolen by an outsider

  17. Remember • If something seems too good to be true, it is. • Never tell anyone your password, financial information, etc. via email • Look for the ‘s’ in https:// • Use AVG Antivirus! • Be vigilant with your kids!

  18. Spam • Spam is unsolicited commercial emails—unwanted ads in your inbox • May be to phish for information or transmit a virus • Sample subjects: • RE: Pharmacy sale 80% off! • Ama-zingly fresh sk!n with n0 wrinkles • We renamed your account • From an old friend • Your mistake • Don’t even open these emails

  19. Anti-spam • Delete without opening! • If you open it, click on nothing and don’t reply • Gmail has really good spam filters that catch most spam. • Spam filters include “mark as spam” buttons: future email from that address will be filtered • Don’t buy anything from companies that email you randomly! Especially not medicine!
