Personal History Martha Stoeger Nan Evans • Teaching at Faubion for 15 years. • Two children 20 & 25 • Extended family live in Portland. • Enjoys reading and puttering in the garden. • Teaching at Faubion for 7 years. • One child age 3 • Extended family live in Portland • Enjoys reading and puttering in the garden.

DifferentiationHow We Teach Each Child What They Need To Learn We use flexible grouping strategies to continually create and dismantle learning pods to address specific academic needs, especially in the areas of reading and math.  Teachers use formal and informal assessment methods to determine which children require additional instruction and support in all areas of their education.

Differentiation Target Skills in Math Stage 1 Stage 2 • Basic number sense • Ordering greater and lesser numbers • Addition/Subtraction • Shapes • Identifying and describing 2 and 3 dimensional shapes • Place value • Ones, tens, hundreds • Money – coin identification and exchange • Fractions and Time • ½, ¼ - Reading a clock • Multiplication • 2’s, 10’s, 5’s • Graphs • Reading bar graphs, pictographs, line graphs • Problem Solving • Identify operation, explain method, verify.

Differentiation Target Skills in Literacy (Reading and Writing) Stage 1 Stage 2 • Clear association of letters and sounds • Ability to produce ideas in written words and pictures • Ability to summarize main idea • Identification of setting and characters • Making reasonable predictions • Reading grade level text fluently • Beginning to identify themes and genres • Writing compound sentences with “because, or, also” • Can apply revising and editing lessons to own writing • Adds sensory details to writing

Science and Social Studies we do differently For these areas - where the emphasis is more on the content of information - we use cooperative learning pods so that children of different abilities can work together, assisting each other using their own unique strengths, to come to an authentic understanding of the material.

Content Areas Science Social Studies • Rocks and Minerals: Using the scientific method to conduct experiments • Growing Things: Making observations to collect data about what happens when plants grow. • Changes: Understanding the different states of matter. • Year long study of the “Web of Life”: Predicting, observing, and analyzing the phases of organic development. • Oregon Geography • Orientation of borders, landforms, natural resources • Portland geography • Rivers • Mountains • Streets • Portland history • Early settlement • Business/commerce • Bridges

  8. Our aim is to create an environment where each individual can feel free to express themselves in a way that works for the good of the entire classroom. To do this we encourage questioning, observing, problem solving, sharing supplies, sitting in table groups and learning games together. Lifeskills and Community

  9. TESTING Third Grade is the first year of standardized testing. All students take reading and math tests using a computer. Weekly homework contains a reading passage that has comprehension questions, vocabulary and inferential questions very similar to those found on the State Test. Math practice is also supported by homework as well as classroom instruction. Vocabulary is at the heart of each strand, so encourage your child to share weekly signal words or new vocabulary with you at home.

  10. Faubion is a Title I School As such, we receive additional funding that creates high levels of support for all students. We are fortunate this year to have the following programs in place: • Extra staff – classroom teachers, instructional specialists who work with staff and students,educational assistants • PK Program • Literacy Program • Well stocked library • Fieldtrips • Grab and Go Breakfast: Please have your child pick up a breakfast every morning. • If they aren’t hungry, someone else in our classroom might be. • Daily Snack: Fresh fruit and vegetables every day. • Parent engagement and educational opportunities • Parent/Teacher Conferences: November 21st and 22nd • Please sign up for a spot before you leave tonight.
