The London Sexual Health Programme Why a framework for London? • To improve the Sexual Health of Londoners through better commissioning • In response to reviews of Sexual Health and HIV strategy over the last 2 years which identified the need to strengthen commissioning at Local, Regional and National levels focusing on: • Accelerated tariff development • Integration of services • Enhancing the role of SH networks • Strengthened focus on prevention

The London Sexual Health Programme Current context Sexual Health is a public health and financial priority for London Successes • 99% access to GUM within 48 hrs • London achieved the 25% Chlamydia screening target by March 2010 • Uptake of LARC increased to 22/1000 females in the age range 15-44 in 08/09 Issues • STIs- 10% increase in attendances at GUM clinics • HIV- 8-10% increase in diagnosis: • c50% late diagnoses in African communities • c20% late diagnoses in gay men/men who have sex with men • Teenage conceptions- 44.6/1000 females age 15-17 (2008) • Abortion- still c25% higher than England average at all age groups • Contraception- LARC usage still 46.9% lower than England average

The London Sexual Health Programme Sexual Health as a commissioning priority for NHS in London • Acknowledgement of the particular issues in the Capital requiring a co-ordinated, London-wide approach to commissioning • Recognition of the need to focus on prevention as well as treatment • Sex and Our City (2008) - London's first Sexual Health Needs assessment and service mapping document published • Need to update the London Sexual Health Strategic Framework (2004) in response to new guidance and changing need • Over £500m spent on Sexual health services (excluding GP prescribing)
