Auschwitz • September 3 – Members of the secret annex were sent on the last transport from Westerbork to Auschwitz. • All of them survived selection.
Edith Frank • When Anne and Margot became sick at Auschwitz, Edith saved all her food rations and gave them to the girls. • After the girls left, Edith died from starvation.
Anne and Margot Frank • October 28 – Anne and Margot were sent to Bergen Belsen. • Both girls fell victim to the typhus outbreak at the camp in March 1945, Anne only • a few days later than Margot. • The camp was liberated by the British in April.
Otto Frank • Otto remained at Auschwitz and was liberated in January 1945. • He went back to Amsterdam and lived with Miep and Henk while getting his life back together. • He later remarried and had Anne’s diary published.
Peter Van Daan • Peter was evacuated on a forced march when the Germans abandoned Auschwitz to the Russians. • He arrived at Mauthausen Concentration Camp in January 1945 and placed in an outdoor labor group. • In April Peter was sent to the sick barracks and died in May.
Auguste Van Daan • Auguste is sent to Bergen-Belsen Concentration Camp with eight other women in November 1944. • In February 1945, she is deported to Raguhn and in April to Theresienstadt (in Czechoslovakia), where she died shortly after arrival.
Hermann Van Daan • Hermann survived the selection at Auschwitz in September 1944. • He is gassed to death a few weeks later.
Fritz Pfeffer • From Auschwitz, Pfeffer was sent to Neuengamme and died there December 20, 1944. • He was married posthumously in April 1953 to a Christian woman. • His son Werner survived the war in England and later moved to the U.S.
Who Else? • Victor Kugler and Johannes Kleinman were arrested and sent to a prison for enemies of the regime in the Netherlands. • Kleinman was released after 7 weeks, but Kugler worked at various camps until the war’s end. • Miep Gies wrote a book, Anne Frank Remembered, and gave many presentations about her interactions with the people hiding in the Annex. She died in 2010.
