Parent Information Night Title I Interventions and The Fountas and Pinnell Word Study Program
Flexible grouping during intervention time • Each grade level has a 30 minute flexible group time each day • Teachers and specialists work with small groups based on the needs of the students • Groups are flexible and students may work with any teacher on the team
Assessment Data and Instruction • The team meets at the beginning of the year and in January to review data for all students • Data points include: NWEA MAP scores, Fountas and Pinnell benchmark tests, formal and informal curriculum assessments
Data Team Members • Classroom Teacher/ Grade level team members • Reading Specialist • District 128 Math Coach • District 128 Psychologist • Building Principals
What does reading intervention look like • Designated 30 minute block of small group literacy instruction at your child’s reading level • LLI and other resources • Go Math intervention resources in the classroom
Progress Monitoring • Problem solving meetings with grade level teachers • Problem solving meetings with the district team when a student is not making adequate progress. • The data team develops SMART goals and monitor progress using running records and Aimsweb progress monitoring

The Fountas & Pinnell Comprehensive Phonics, Spelling, and Word Study This program focuses on: • Essential understandings related to the alphabetic system that characterizes English. • Understanding what students learned before and what they will learn after the current lesson. • Teaching skills that will contribute to reading and writing continuous text.
Nine Areas of Learning • Early Literacy Concepts • Phonological Awareness • Letter Knowledge • Letter-Sound Relationships • Spelling Patterns • High-Frequency Words • Word Meaning/ Vocabulary • Word Structure • Word-Solving Actions
Facets of the program • Students spiral through the nine areas of learning; increasing complexity over time • Students typically achieve mastery in the first three areas (Early Literacy Concepts, Phonological Awareness, and Letter Knowledge) by the end of 1st Grade. These areas then drop off. • The skills are not complete after 3rd Grade. We all continue to learn about language throughout our lives. • HOW? By using language.
Facets of the program • 2-3 lessons per week • 15-30 minutes per lesson • Whole group • Independent Practice • Share
What do the lessons entail? • Whole Group • Teacher led • Focused on specific skill • Often review previous skills • Independent Practice • Students work individually, in pairs, or in a small group; teacher circulates and assists as needed • Practicing the skill or skills taught during whole group • Sorts • Games • Share • Students review and share their experience during Independent Practice
Types of Lessons • Whole Group • Kindergarten • Review beginning sounds; focus on /b/ and /k/ • Sort words • 1st Grade • Review beginning and ending sounds, rhyming words • Change beginning sounds
Types of Lessons Continued • 2nd Grade • Read words; look for similarity • Discuss y at the end of a word • Sort words • 3rd Grade • Review how to use a dictionary • Sort words based on sample guide words
Types of Lessons Continued • Independent Practice • Kindergarten • Independent picture sort /m/ and /r/ • 1st Grade • Partner work: Say words that rhyme with pictures given (Grill/Snail) • 2nd Grade • Partner work: Read words, write in correct column (Sky/Happy) • 3rd Grade • Independent word sort; place words under correct guide words
Flexible group time is used for the following: • This is a 30 minute daily block that may include the following: • Pull out reading and math interventions- (parents are notified with a Title I letter) • Extra practice on a skill or concept / reteaching or retesting • Enrichment on a skill or concept or unit • Students may work with any teacher on the grade level team during this time • The groups may change weekly based the needs of the student. There is not formal parent notification unless a student is in Title I interventions
