  1. Faculty of electronics: Prague 2005 Paul de Courcel Jacquelin de Guerry Galileo : the European Satellite Navigation System

  2. GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) The GNSS is a satellite system that is used to pinpoint the geographic location of a user's receiver anywhere in the world. Two GNSS systems already exists : • GPS : United States • GLONASS : Russia Each of the GNSS systems employs a constellation of orbiting satellites working in conjunction with a network of ground stations. A triangulation is used to locate the user. Each satellite transmits coded signals at precise intervals Depending on the particular technologies used, GNSS precision varies. 3. Galileo services (1) • Galileo satellite-only services : Open Service : suitable for mass-market applications. Commercial Service : allow the development of professional applications, with increased navigation performances and added value data, compared with the Open Service. Safety of Life : the target markets are safety critical users, for example maritime, aviation and trains, whose applications or operations require stringent performance levels. Public Regulated Service : provide a higher level of protection against the threats to Galileo Signals in space than is available for the Open Services (OS, CS and SoL). Search and Rescue service : represents the contribution of Europe to the international COSPAS-SARSAT cooperative effort on humanitarian Search and Rescue activities. Paul de Courcel Jacquelin de Guerry Faculty of electronics: Prague 2005

  4. Galileo services (2) • Locally assisted services : The Galileo services will be, where necessary, enhanced by means of the Galileo local component to satisfy higher user demands with respect to accuracy, integrity, availability and communication over local areas. • EGNOS Services : Provide a multimodal and civil service to different European user categories, namely general public/mass market users, specialist users and safety critical users. • Combined services : Galileo is being designed to be interoperable with other systems and, therefore, it will, in a great many instances, be used as part of a combined service Paul de Courcel Jacquelin de Guerry Faculty of electronics: Prague 2005

  6. Applications Individuals, companies and administrations will all be able to benefit, whether on the roads, railways, in the skies or at sea. Transport : Galileo services will be used in every transport domain, namely aeronautical, maritime, road, rail, and pedestrian. Safety : increase safety in many areas such as transportation, emergency operations and various professional activities. Finance : Security, data integrity, authenticity and confidentiality have emerged as major issues in the electronic exchange of documents Paul de Courcel Jacquelin de Guerry Faculty of electronics: Prague 2005
