  3. THE ACT • Normal exams test mostly your memory • the ACT tests problem-solving skills and memory • thus, this test is highly vulnerable to test-smart strategies and techniques • the KEY to succeed is to think strategically and creatively

  4. 3 PRINCIPLES • If you follow these 3 key principles, you will be in full command of your ACT test taking experience • 1. Learn the test format • 2. Learn test strategies • 3. Learn the concepts tested

  5. STRATEGIES • Basics • 3 ½ hour test • Taken by Juniors and Seniors for college admissions • The ACT is NOT an IQ test • it is a test of problem-solving skills

  6. STRATEGIES • It consists of 5 subject areas • English • Math • Reading • Science Reasoning • Writing • All tests are designed to test skills, NOT previous knowledge May I be excused? My brain is full.

  7. THE TEST • 3 hours long (2 hours and 55 minutes) • includes a short break (between the 2nd & 3rd subtests) • 215 scored questions • 4 subject tests • English (75 questions) • Math (60 questions) • Reading (40 questions) • Science Reasoning (40 questions) • Writing (1 persuasive prompt)

ACT scores range from 1-36 Average score range: 17-23 This test only counts CORRECT ANSWERS If you only get 53% of the test questions correct, you can still receive a composite score of 20 If you only get 63% of the questions correct, you will still have a score of 23 if you only get 75% correct, you will receive a 26 SCORING

  9. SHOULD YOU GUESS? YES! • No penalty for wrong answers • Harder questions are worth the same as easier questions • Don’t waste time agonizing over one question--Guess and move on! • You can come back to questions if you have time left
