This newsletter is the result of the Board’s commitment to enhancing communications to the Chapter membership. The objective of this newsletter is to provide the Calgary membership with a better mix of communications that is open, honest, frequent and straight forward. We will endeavor to align the newsletter with Business issues facing FEI Calgary and Nationally. We anticipate sending this news letter out quarterly through email distribution and through FEI’s National website. The Board has been busy over the last several months. Our first step to improving the Chapter governance is subdividing into the following committees: Membership, Advocacy, Programs, Communication, Treasury, and Learning and Development. Each committee has a charter and started to implement its charter. In this issue, each committee will provide an overview of its mandate. As always these committees need volunteers. If you have an interest and want to be involved, please step forward and contact one of the directors. FEI Canada current projects include a review of its governance model and strategic plan. Your Board has participated in each of these projects and when required has responded to FEI Canada. When we become aware of project outcomes you will be informed. Once again, please read through the newsletter and let us know your thoughts. March, 2008 Calgary Chapter Learning & Development Committee As part of this inaugural issue of the Calgary Chapter Newsletter, I would like to introduce the Learning & Development Committee and the initiatives we currently have underway. The primary function of our Committee is to provide continuing professional development for the Calgary Chapter members. Our current initiatives, which are managed through two sub-committees, are the Career Services Workshops and the Mentoring Program. The Career Services Sub-Committeeorganizes three to four workshops each year, running from September to June. These workshops focus on topics of interest for senior financial executives, attempting to cover situations faced or leadership skills required in their roles. The workshops are limited to about 25 people to encourage interaction and networking. The sessions are lead by a guest speaker – a recognized expert or leader in the topic area, focusing on non-promotional, informative content. Workshops held in the last year included; Negotiating the Deal You Want Make Your Time Attracting Investors More Effective Situational Leadership Executive Compensation & Employment Contracts The Committee used feedback from workshop participants to begin planning its Spring workshops, one in May and one in June. Stay tuned for more information on the session topics and how you can register. The Career Services Sub-Committee is supported by the following Calgary Chapter members who volunteer their time and creativity to bring you relevant and timely workshops; Sean Bovingdon, Richard Brimble, Terene Tharagan, Brad Thompson (Chair), Lisa Pilon, and Walter Wakula. The Mentoring Program Sub-Committee was established to facilitate Learning Partnerships. The Chapter feels that there is exceptional value in facilitating a mentorship program within the membership. This gives established executives the opportunity to develop their mentoring skills and share the benefit of their many years of experience, and for those individuals stepping into executive roles, the opportunity to learn from city leaders in their industry. This program has been developed for the Calgary Chapter members in response to the growing need of our membership to acquire essential leadership capabilities that are not typically learned in the classroom, but more likely from the transfer of knowledge by peer interaction. Our program draws on best practices in which learning and partnering can be most effective. Currently we have seven Learning Partnerships in our first year of the program. We plan to conduct another formal information and enrolment period in June to kick-off new Learning Partnerships in September. The Mentoring Program Sub-Committee is supported by the following Calgary Chapter members who volunteer their time and creativity to design and facilitate this program; Jim Brown, Laura Cillis (Chair) and Joe Doolan. The program is also supported with the assistance of a professional in this field, Joan Hill, Core Consulting Inc. Your Learning & Development Committee members welcome any comments you have on our current initiatives or any ideas or suggestions for other initiatives that may be of interest to the membership. March, 2008 Calgary Chapter Membership Committee: One of our goals this year is to expand our Calgary Membership. Please consider bringing a guest to the next meeting. If you know people who are prospective members of FEI, please invite them to one of our meetings. Membership News: For the first six months of the 2007-2008 year, we are pleased to report that we have recruited 17 new members to the Calgary Chapter. The total Calgary membership now stands at 300 members as at February 12, 2008. Although the net increase in members, including resignations and transfers, was +7 during this period, the Membership Committee is considering several initiatives during 2008 that will drive results for the remainder of the year, toward our goal of surpassing 300 members. During the week of November 11, the National office conducted a recruitment, mail-out campaign and all Calgary prospects received an invitation to join the chapter. Approximately 500 prospective members in the Calgary area received the letter which summarized the benefits of FEI and included several quotes from current Chapter members. Thank you to all members who submit potential prospects.
