Carbohydrates Starches & sugars found in foods Main source of energy 45-65% of diet TYPES Simple-Sugars Complex-Starches (pasta) Fiber- Fruits, veggies, whole grains
Proteins *Muscle growth & repair Types -20 Amino Acids All but 9 you produce…those 9 are called Essential Amino Acids. (You must get them from your diet!!!) Boys- 52 Grams/DayGirls- 46 Grams/Day
Fats Types of Fats Unsaturated- Better for you!! Saturated- May hurt your health!! Trans Fat- Through a process called hydrogenation…they become saturated!! Cholesterol- Waxy fat like substance in your blood SHOULD BE LESS THAN 30% OF YOUR CALORIC INTAKE
VITAMINS Found in foods & help regulate body processes. 2 Types *Water-Soluble *Fat-Soluble See Fig. 10.6 (Pg. 263)
MINERALS Your body cannot produce them…must get from food!! Fig. 10.7 (Pg. 264) *Sodium- United States uses too much of it!! Osteoporosis- Bones become fragile & break easily!
WATER Need at least 8 Eight ounce servings of pure water a day!! P.O.A.C.
