The Laurisilva of Madeira is a place of importance for its biological diversity. A large proportion of its plants and animals are unique to the laurel forest, with significant differences to other laurel forest areas.
Shearwater In late summer and autumn, most birds migrate into the Atlantic as far north as the south-western coasts of Great Britain and Ireland. They return to the Mediterranean in February. The biggest colony is located in Savage Islands, Madeira. These birds are most common in temperate and cold waters.

With the arrival of refrigerators and other similar devices in our modern times, it has become possible for us to have ice all year-round. Now … imagine yourself on Madeira Island 100 years ago …. how could you get any ice? It was only possible during the winter and in the highest regions of the island, when it snowed.

The TrocazPigeon was formally described in 1829 by Karl Heineken, a German medical doctor and ornithologist who was living on Madeira at the time. He suggested designating the new species by its local name, and refer to the bird's colouredneck patches.
Furseal They are much more closely related to sea lions than true seals. Fur seals share with other otariids the ability to turn their rear limbs forward and move on all fours.
Zino’s Petrel (Freira) The Zino's Petrel or Freira, Pterodromamadeira, is a small seabird which is endemic to the island of Madeira. This long-winged petrel has a grey back and wings, with a dark "W" marking across the wings, and a grey upper tail.

Laurisilvaforest The laurisilva forests are found in the islands of Macaronesia in the eastern Atlantic, in particular the Azores, Madeira Islands, and western Canary Islands.
