SPECIFIC SUPPORT ACTIONAn EEC project support by the 6th PCRD Biorefinery EuroviewMarch 2007 – February 2009Current situation and potential of the biorefinery concept in the EU: strategic framework and guidelines for its development
WP1 Coordinator : Europol’Agro (EUAO) • V. Steinmetz : General representative of Europol’Agro and Chief coordinator of WP1 • D. Christian : Project manager of Europol’Agro and Coordinator of WP1 Status of WP 1 • WP1 : “State of the art of existing biorefineries” • WP1 Duration (initially) : 8 months :1st March – 31rd October • Kick-off meeting with BIOPOL : April 4th
Status of WP 1 • Overall objectives of WP1 • Identification, classification and mapping of existing EU biorefineries (resources, products, process) and of existing prospectives. • Measurement of the current processing potential of existing facilities including energy balance and life cycle analysis. • Outputs : define the state of the art of existing European biorefineries.
Status of WP 1 • Tasks of WP1 : • Task 1.1. Definition of the existing concepts of biorefinery in Europe…. Completed (report to be written) • Task 1.2. Review of existing industrial platforms…. in progress • Task 1.3. Mapping of biorefineries in Europe…. to be done
Status of WP 1 • Past Timetable : • May 4th : WP1- WebMeeting 1: selection of the concepts, agreed on a general definition of Biorefinery and preparing the questionnaire • May 9th : WP1- WebMeeting 2: validation of concepts selected, finalization of questionnaire and list of stakeholders. • June 12th : Biorefinery Euroview WP1/WP2 and BIOPOL WP1 coordination Meeting in Brussels : agreed on a common industrial questionnaire (BIOPOL/BE) • June 28th: Phone Meeting : finalization on common BIOPOL/BE questionnaire • July 10th and 11th: WP1/WP2/WP3 - Meeting / Project Executive Board
Status of WP 1 : completed (report to be written) • Task 1.1. Concepts for biorefinery in Europe • Based on a review received from each partners of information concerning : • Definitions of Biorefinery • Definitions of Biorefinery concepts • EU Research programs : • EU Conferences : • Existing/pilot/ futur industrial Platforms : 287 contacts • General definition of Biorefinery • Selection of EU existing concepts of Biorefinery and conversion technologies • Comparison of those concepts with developments going-on outside Europe • D1.1 = Report on current biorefinery concepts in Europe (31th July)
Status of WP 1 :… completed • Task 1.1. Concepts for biorefinery in Europe • General definition for Biorefinery selected : “Integrated bio-based industries, using a variety of different technologies to produce chemicals, biofuels, food and feed ingredients, biomaterials (including fibers) and power from biomass raw materials »
Status of WP 1 :… completed • Task 1.1. Concepts for biorefinery in Europe • Concepts of Biorefinery selected : • Green Biorefinery • typically companies that run in a campaign fashion, using wet biomass, i.e. unstable renewable resources, such as potatoes, tapioca, sugar beets and sugar cane • Cereal Biorefinery • using stable dry cereals such as maize, wheat and rice to produce starch and derivatives • Oilseed Biorefinery • using oil-containing seeds, such as rapeseed, sunflower, olive and soy, typically producing food and feed ingredients, biodiesel and oleochemical products • Forest based and lignocellulosic Biorefinery • using forest based and lignocellulosic biomass to produce cellulose fibres, chemicals, lignin and energy.
Status of WP 1 :… completed • Task 1.1. Concepts for biorefinery in Europe • Conversion technology identified : • Thermochemical conversion • Pyrolysis • Gasification • Biochemical conversion • Fermentation • (Bio)catalysis • Digestion • Hydrolysis • Other chemical processes • Incineration • Heat and power generation • Biomass fractionation • Mechanical separation • Extraction / Purification • Distillation
Status of WP 1 :… in progress • Task 1.1. Concepts for biorefinery in Europe : • Comparison of those concepts with developments going-on outside Europe • D1.1 = Report on current biorefinery concepts in Europe (31th July)
Status of WP 1 :… in progress • Task 1.2. Review of existing platforms • September : Based on a review of information from questionnaire sent to EU industries • EU Research programs • Existing/pilot/ futur industrial platforms • August-September: Based on a review by each partners (2 countries of EU (no BIOPOL countries) per partner to determine) to detect existing industrial plants and the potential development of biorefineries • For each concept (4 concepts selected in Task 1.1), a detailed review of existing industrial plants will be conducted, including their advancement state (industrial, pilot plant, …). • A maximum of 8 - 10 platforms will be selected as a sample of the different categories existing in Europe, from a technological, geographical and agricultural point of view. • D1.2 : Report : Selection and description (advancement state) of the 8-10 selected platforms (31th october)
Status of WP 1 :… in progress • Task 1.2. Review of existing platforms • Biopol(WP1) and Biorefinery Euroview(WP1/WP2) common industrial questionnaire finalized early July. • Biorefinery Euroview partners general introducing letter • Modalities for Biorefinery Euroview partners: • Each partner will : • Receive his list of BE contacts consolidated (end of this week) • Fill in the questionnaire and in the introducing letter the yellow parts • Sent to his contact in the list (mid-july) • Receive the answers (Deadline : September 7th) • Transmit the answers to WP1 and WP2 coordinators • Biorefinery Euroview WP1/WP2 coordinators and BIOPOL WP1 coordinator will gather the answers • End of September : Common Meeting with BIOPOL • Analyze of answers of questionnaire and information received from each partners • Selection of industrial platforms to visit (for Biorefinery Euroview partners
Status of WP 1 :… to be done • Task 1.3. Mapping of biorefinery • September/october/november: based on the visit of the industrial plants : (8-10 selected in Task 1.3), data will be collected on: • Energy balance • Life cycle analysis • Economical aspects • An European mapping will be built based on extrapolation of the previous samples. • A comparison will be made with the main existing biorefineries outside Europe. • D1.3 :Map of existing European industrial sites (31th december) • D1.4 :Review of non European Industrial biorefinery sites (31th december) • D1.5 : Workshop report (January)
