What really is Flagella ? • Pill – shaped • Hair – like extensions off the cell membrane • Flagella is a kind of cell not a part of a cell. • The sperm of many animals, algae, and even ferns. • Made of 11 Flagellin Filaments
Varieties of Flagella • Bacterial – helical filament that rotates like a screw. • Archaeal – similar to bacterial but nonhomologus • Eukaryotic – a whip–like structure that lashes back and fourth.
Location • Attached to the cell membrane • Faces outward • Not visible from outside • Spiral shape • Present at the tip of the cell
Flagella Facts • In a large multicell organisms the flagella role is to move fluid past the cell. • Flagella has a propeller motion. • Cilia has a back – and – fourth movement.
Cilia and Flagella Are protrusions from some cells that aid in cellular locomotion
