Flagella & Cilia Whip-like appendages of cells that are the main source of movement in Eukaryotic cells. • Flagella • 1-2 Long appendages • Tail like appendage. • Cilia • Several short appendages. • Usually lines the cell.
Structure • Undulipodium – (9+2 organelle) • Characterized by 9fused pairs of microtubule doublets surrounding2central single microtubules • Basal Body • Cilia/Flagella grows from, and is attached to. • Plasma Membrane • Surrounds the flagella
Function • The organization of Flagella/Cilia allows microtubule to slide against one another and causes a bending movement. • This allows cells to do things such as swim, or move water across the surface of the cell. Examples Cilia
Diseases (Ciliopathy) • PrimaryCiliaryDyskinesia • Respiratory Tract, Fallopian Tube, Sperm • Ectopic Pregnancy • Male Infertility • Polycystic Kidney Disease • Retina Degeneration • SitusInversus • Cilialfunction is responsible for the normal left-right asymmetry in mammals.
Question#1 Flagella and Cilia are the main source of _________ in Eukaryotic cells. • Digestion • Movement • Protein • Food
Question#2 Cilia are made up of… • 1-2 long tail-like appendages. • 1-2 short tail-like appendages. • Several short tail like appendages. • Several short appendages lining the cell.
